The journey to Freecloud is interrupted by a detour to the refugee planet Vashti where Picard reunites with Elnor, a young Romulan he befriended during the relocation. Meanwhile, Narek continues to learn more about Soji.
The Trekzone Review
Our first true episode of the series where we move from introducing the characters and the direction, to actually getting into eating the main course of story line and plot development.
We see planet Vashti and the beginning of the relocation movement fourteen years earlier, right on the attack on Mars. We see the duty bound and enthusiastic Picard we left in Nemesis and then within five minutes we see his whole world fall apart… before he becomes disillusioned and withdraws from the world.
Narek and Soji continue to build their relationship – which will be interesting to watch it all fall apart as it inevitably will. His relationship with his sister needs some explaining, as I’m sure it will, it’s a bit too personal but there’s obviously some reasoning there.
We meet Elnor for the first time, played by Aussie Evan Evagora, a young and impressionable Romulan who took a real liking to Picard fourteen years earlier. I’m sure we’ll witness some of the new things of this part of the timeline through his eyes.
A very nice nod to human history in the naming of the class of ships tasked with rescuing the refugees of the Hobus explosion… the Wallenberg class can be assumed to refer to Raoul Wallenberg who was a Swedish architect, banker, diplomat and humanitarian – and worked tirelessly to save tens of thousands of Jews fleeing persecution during the later stages of World War II.
The climax of this episode, I think, really struck to the heart of what Stewart said this series would be about – refugees, politics and the current world climate. Nothing as world ending as the vocal minority were bemoaning.
And finally, the dog fight in space – beautiful. So glad we’re back to phaser and disruptor beams, and classic looking ships… just gorgeous. Oh, hello 7!!
