While Voyager investigates an unusual inversion nebula – that somehow has remained stable for a few centuries – Tuvok and Kim become intrigued by a holodeck character…
Massive steps forward for Tuvok as he inadvertently causes Kim to be jealous of his actions with a hologram. This episode is a lot better executed then just some holodeck fantasy story because as we discover the hologram is actually a very lonely alien interacting with our crew from inside the nebula they’re studying.
Our security chief learns that loneliness isn’t a weakness or a fallibility, but something that can happen to the best of us when we don’t have friends around us… and colleagues don’t quite cut it. The ending with Tuvok opening up and teaching Kim to play kal toh is a nice touch and a softening of the cold Vulcan exterior that was long overdue.
