Investigating a rogue planetoid for dilithium, Neelix’s lungs are removed by an alien race who suffer from a deadly phage that is slowly destroying their population… forcing them to harvest replacement organs from other species…
It was about time we ran into another spacefiaring alien species in the Delta Quadrant and they gave Neelix the opportunity to expand his character as he suffers through a lack of lungs… even in a Talaxian they are very important! Not only Neelix, but The Doctor again got some great screen time as he deals with his new permanent patient.
The Doctor creates an ingenious way of keeping our new cook alive with holographic lungs, and I like to think of this episode as the beginning of him as not just a hologram. I think Kes is the perfect person to help the Doctor with his struggle as she is not biased as our Alpha quadrant characters.
