Having been pulled into the mycelial network, Tilly learns the truth about the spore drive. On a rescue mission to save her, Stamets isn’t prepared for what else they find inside. Meanwhile, Section 31 is assigned to help track down Spock…
We’re continuing our pursuit of Spock in the background this week on Discovery – because it’s time to wrap up the mycelial network, and why it’s never used again in Star Trek… even though it’s not mentioned in this episode, I think I know Starfleet well enough to say that once the current crisis is over there is no way they’re going to allow continued use of this type of propulsion knowing that it is killing sentient beings in another dimension.
They straight up designed a new starship to combat the effect of standard warp drive in late-TNG, so that’s a pretty good indicator that the spore drive is dead.
Wiseman again knocked it out of the park with her portrayal of the frightened, yet duty bound Ensign Tilly – the 180 degree shift in her judgement of May (when she learnt they were in danger) was perfect and slotted in perfectly – once again – with what we’ve come to know and love about Starfleet officers. The crew’s willingness to risk themselves to save one member was also fantastic – we’ve developed so much in just these few episodes compared to the entire first season.
Hugh’s back too which is nice for Stamets, but there seems like there’ll be repercussions to that – in some ways, I wish that he would’ve had to have sacrificed himself to save the mycelial network… it would’ve been a fitting a definitive end to the character, but I’m also happy he’s back.
Plus! Tyler’s back. Oh joy. Section 31 is here and in co-op mode with our heroes, how long will that last I wonder?
