On a planetary survey mission to investigate test sites for Project Genesis, the crew of the U.S.S. Reliant is marooned on Ceti Alpha V by the notorious Eugenics War survivor Kahn who holds a grudge against Kirk for stranding him and his crew on the planet…

The Trekzone Review

Unimpressed by the first movie, both in reviews and profit, Paramount gave the franchise another chance under the guidance of Harve Bennett and Nicholas Meyer who were told to cut costs and turn the movies into a worthy addition of the TV series over the next few movies.

They started out by looking back at The Original Series and latched onto the idea of checking in with Kahn after fifteen years. They sprinkled in a little wistfulness for the past in Kirk’s pining for the good old days and treated it all with a shock ending.

Harve and Nicholas also contributed the franchise’s first use of phaser bolts instead of beams and a different warp effect – something today’s audience bemoans Discovery and the JJ movies for doing… (I put my hand up to that too.)

However, despite those changes this is the biggest and best of all the movies, bar none. You get Ricardo’s chest oozing through his sculpted costume, you get Kirk wearing glasses and acting old for much of the movie and you get cadets running the big E (well, running around at least.) While Kirk’s son is shoe horned in for some emotional effect that falls almost flat and a fully-clothed-for-the-whole-movie Carol Marcus acting to remind our Captain of his younger days.
