The Star Trek family got a little bit smaller this week with the passing of two people who played an influential role in Star Trek’s genesis. One was a writer, the other one of the first guest stars to appear on the show, the other was a key writer who would pen some of the great episodes of the franchise.
Additionally, Dorothy Fontana was a trailblazer for other female writers, especially in the science fiction realm. She penned sixteen Star Trek episodes, gave us the Vulcan culture, showed us that computers taking over can be a bad thing, gave Kirk a bad attitude, and the Federation a cloaking device, put Jadzia Dax on trial for the actions of her previous host and co-wrote the beginning of The Next Generation with Gene Roddenberry.
Robert Walker Jr played the titular character in Charlie X, at the beginning of Star Trek, as well as lead roles in movies Ensign Pulver and Young Billy Young. To name a few TV credits, Walker appeared in Route 66, Bonanza, The Time Tunnel, The Six Million Dollar Man, Quincy, M.E., Charlie’s Angels, L.A. Law, and Murder, She Wrote.
Larry Nemecek is back with us this week to reflect on these two losses to the family.
