X-Class Solar Flare Erupts – Likely From The Same Sunspot Group Responsible For May’s Epic Geomagnetic Storm

An X-class solar flare has erupted from the Sun's southeastern limb, the tracked location of sunspot group AR3664

That Sunspot group was responsible for May’s solar storm and impressive aurora light show that followed, with scientists reasonably confident of the correlation between the flare and the sunspot group after tracking it with seismic echoes and helioseismology data.

The hyperactive cluster will be in view of Earth once again later this week, and with a love for the dramatic X-class flares we could be in for more space weather.

However, AR3664 as we know will be renamed because the lack of tracking on the far side of the Sun means scientists cannot guarantee this is the same group, so it’ll get a new designation.
