A severe burst of coronal mass ejections and solar flares made contact with Earth’s atmosphere over the weekend

It’s caused the strongest geomagnetic storm in around two decades.

The resulting aurora Australis and Borealis have seen some incredible images adorning the internet over the past few days. In Australia reports have indicated latitudes closer to the equator are experiencing these awesome sights.

This all stems from those coronal mass ejections erupting from our star, containing billions of tonnes of plasma they shoot off in to the solar system from the corona at around eight hundred kilometers per second.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology’s Space Weather Forecasting Centre issued a geomagnetic storm warning on Friday, predicting a G4 – out of five – class event.
