To Boldly Go… Again – A New TV Series is Coming!

“This is thrilling…”

Larry Nemecek – email to TREKZONE.org

Star Trek is coming back to the episodic format almost ten years after it left. CBS Home Entertainment today announced, through the official website, that it is planning a new series to premiere on the CBS TV network in January 201 after which, the series will be available solely on their digital platform CBS All Access for residents of the US, however formats will be made available for international TV and on-line markets.

This is great news for fans as we finally have something more to look forward to as the fiftieth anniversary of the series approaches.

In an email to TREKZONE.org, noted Trek historian Larry Nemecek said:

“For me, let’s just hope it’s not any reboot or rehash, and [they] use all new characters. And that people have learned that Prime doesn’t have to be hard. There are plenty of corners in the Star Trek sandbox to be explored by a savvy show runner and his/her team.”

This news, posted at 4pm GMT (2/11) by STARTREK.COM, has spread like wildfire amongst fans in all corners of the world with many expressing concern for the executive charged with it’s production – Alex Kurtzman, the man who co-penned 2009 and Into Darkness – but overwhelmingly there is a chorus singing loudly and proudly that our series is coming back to episodic form.

“[If] CBS and Kurtzman take the time, trouble and budget to do it right… they’ll make a hungry fanbase truly fulfilled AND even more oodles of cash”

Kurtzman’s production company currently produces the rebooted Hawaii Five-0 and new series Limitless both airing on CBS – the former now in it’s sixth season, while both are enjoying healthy ratings State-side.

“Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

David Stapf, President CBS Television Studios

Editorial:
Nemecek noted that hungry Trekkies probably would’ve paid for Showtime or Netflix subscriptions if they didn’t have them already as a way of accessing new Star Trek… and I think he’s right. No matter what shape the new series takes, I’m sure we’re all going to give it the benefit of the doubt and then wait and hope that it turns into something great.

My only concern is that our expectations maybe too high, it has been a long time between drinks for Star Trek on TV and we maybe hoping for too much. Series 6 has to find it’s feet on it’s own, then it can stretch and grow. I don’t think we can see old faces or places, we need to go somewhere new… in the prime universe.

But most of all, we need to go boldly, where no one has gone before…
