Buzz Aldrin promptly followed behind him as millions on planet Earth watched the live television coverage.

Australia played a crucial role in that mission, and has done with every space mission since, by providing downlinking capabilities whenever spacecraft are aligned with our side of the planet. In fact, the CSIRO scientists working at tracking stations in Honeysuckle Creek, Parkes and Tidbinbilla were responsible for providing the first frames from the lunar surface.

Joining Dr Brad Tucker and I today is Glen Nagle, communications director at the Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex (CDSCC) as we talk about Eagle’s remarkable mission, the future as we prepare to return to the moon and also those lunar conspiracies…
